The Journal Times Contest FAQ

How do I submit a photo to the photo contest?

To enter, visit www.journaltimes.com/photocontest between Sunday, June 5, at 12:00 am CST and Tuesday, June 28, at 11:59 pm CST.; complete an entry form with the required information, including your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and photo caption; and submit along with your photograph in accordance with the instructions below, along with the $10 donation entry fee.

What type of photos can I submit?

All photographs must have been taken in Racine County and within two years of the date of entry. The Categories for entries are: (1)Nature & Landscapes - outdoor scenes, sunset / sun rise, urban landscapes, lake shore views, and farm country - to name a few. Showcasing Racine County's outdoor beauty.

(2)Animals - Dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, birds, reptiles, amphibians - as well as photos of wildlife, farm life, and even insects.

(3)Travel & Place - The joys and adventures encountered in Racine County including landscapes and outdoor scenes, as well as people, details and other subjects.

What should I include in the description of my photograph?

Captions are always a good way to engage others in your photography. So take the time to write about the place, time, setting, and situation.

Will my photography be seen in the paper or online?

All entries and entrants’ names will be published in a The Journal Times special section, on or around, Sunday, July 10, 2011 and will be available for viewing at www.journaltimes.com/photocontest.

Can I enter one photograph into multiple categories?

Yes, you may enter the same photograph into as many categories as you see fit. There is an additional $10 donation per entry.

What about getting consent?

Photos will be disqualified from the contest if the consent of any recognizable people can't be obtained.

How many photos may I submit?

You may submit a total of six (6) photos to the contest, in one or more of these categories: Nature & Landscapes, Animals, Travel & Place, along with your $10 donation entry fee per photo.

Do photos have to be taken with a digital camera?

Submitted photos do NOT have to be digital photos from a digital camera. You may download your digital photo at www.journaltimes.com/photocontest or you can bring in or mail your photo to The Journal Times – 212 Fourth Street, Racine, WI 53403. Please include a self addressed stamped envelope if you want the photo returned, or indicate that you will be picking up the photo. If you have a photo you would like converted to a digital file, the Pre-press Department at the Journal Times can provide your original photo as as a digital copy saved to disc for an additional $3.00.

How will my photograph be judged?

Voting consists of three (3) rounds of Journal Times reader ballots and local celebrity and expert ballots for each category.

Where is my entry fee and all money raised going?

100% of all the money raised will go directly to the Newspapers In Education (NIE) program for Racine County schools.

When will the winner be announced?

Winners of The Journal Times Photography Contest will be chosen around August 21, 2011, and notified by phone and/or email.

I’d like to enter a photo that has previously been published. Is that allowed?

Yes, you may enter a photo that has previously been published.

I’d like to enter a photo that has previously won a contest. Is that allowed?

Photographs that have won other contests may be submitted.

Is image manipulation allowed in the photo contest?

Minor burning, dodging, and color correction are acceptable. Hand tinting is acceptable, as is cropping. Fish-eye lenses are acceptable. High dynamic range images (HDRI) and stitched panoramas are acceptable only if the combined parts are all made around the same time. Any changes to an original photograph not itemized here are unacceptable and will render the photograph ineligible for a prize.

When I submit a photo to the photo contest, what rights does The Journal Times have to my submission?

The Journal Times will have the right to display your photo at a potential exhibition of winners; publication of the 2012 Journal Times Community Calendar; and special publication highlighting entries or winners of the contest.

I accidentally uploaded the wrong photo. Can I delete my entry and submit a new entry?

Unfortunately, due to the large volume of images submitted to the contest, all entries are final and cannot be replaced or modified.

Why won't my images upload?

Make sure your images is of good quality and meeting the following requirements: * JPG or JPEG file format (ex. YourImage.jpg or YourImage.jpeg) * Total file size must be under 5 MB.

I didn't receive my confirmation email when submitting online. Why?

,p>Some ISPs (Internet service providers) commonly install email filters that block or filter emails sent from unknown addresses. If you have a "junk mail" box, check to see if that's where the email landed. If you've installed software to monitor your email, make sure your settings aren't causing your emails to get blocked.
